5 Tips to Help Kids Learn How to Read

Teaching kids how to read is not easy, but there are a few things you can do to make the process more fun and manageable for both you and your tiny one.

Tip #1 - Label Everything

Labeling things that kids see and use often helps them begin to recognize words. Use index cards, a bold marker and tape to label things like: door, chair, clock, lamp, table, etc... Your little one will begin to read and recognize these words in books in no time!

Tip #2 - Read a Book at Least Once a Day

This may go without saying, but the easiest way for kids to learn how to read is for them to engage with books. Reading a bedtime story has been proven to help kids develop a love for reading. Use reading strategies like: picture reading; it allows early readers to look at the picture of a text and guess what might be happening in the story.

Tip #3 - Repetition is Key!

You may become bored with reading the same book over and over again, but this is good for kids. The repetition will allow them to become familiar with certain words. They'll be able to fill in blanks when you pause during reading and begin to correctly picture read the entire book.

Tip #4 - Use High Interest Books

If your tiny one is interested in a certain cartoon, animal or topic, read books that incorporate them. They'll gravitate to those books immediately and begin to associate reading with FUN.

Tip #5 - Practice Beginning Letter Sounds

Understanding letter sounds is a foundational skill for reading. Once your little one can recognize letters, it's a great time to introduce letter sounds. You can do this through song. Here is one of our favorite letter sound songs. It's super catchy and kids can dance and learn at the same time.
